To make
an oil lamp, two 6x6 pieces of colored glass are cut, cleaned and stacked together.
At the same time, two 5 inch circles are cut, cleaned and a 4 inch circle of
sheet copper is cut and placed between the two pieces of clear glass.
Both sets are placed into a kiln heated up to1450°f and the glass becomes molten and fuses together to
make two individual pieces of glass.
The 6x6
inch piece of glass is placed into a mold and taken to 1250°f, the glass becomes elastic
and
gravity pulls the glass into the mold. We call this process slumping.
The 5 inch round piece has a hole drilled into the center for the wick.
All
totaled the glass spends about 24 hours in the kilns.
